CLAUDE AI · BEGINNER GUIDE
What is Claude AI?
Claude is a generative AI assistant created by Anthropic. It can help you understand information, write, analyse documents and images, plan work and assist with code through a natural-language conversation.
KEY TAKEAWAY
Think of Claude as a capable collaborator for language and knowledge work—not as a replacement for expertise, original sources or responsible decisions.

BEFORE YOU START
Four words to know
Learn these simple meanings first. We keep the standard English terms because you will see them in courses, documentation and interviews.
- Artificial intelligence (AI)
- Software that can perform tasks that normally need human thinking.
- Generative AI
- AI that creates new text, images, code or other content from an instruction.
- Prompt
- The question or instruction you give to an AI assistant.
- Context
- Background information that helps the AI understand what you need.
THE FOUNDATION
How does Claude work?
Claude is built on large language models. At a simplified level, a language model learns patterns from large amounts of data and generates a response one part at a time based on your prompt, the conversation and the context available to it.
Claude’s conversational interface turns that model into an assistant. You describe a goal in ordinary language, add relevant information and refine the result through follow-up questions. Developers can also access Claude programmatically through Anthropic’s API.
This does not mean Claude “knows” a fact in the same way a person does. Its output can sound confident even when it is wrong. Treat the response as generated work that needs an appropriate level of review.

PRACTICAL CAPABILITIES
What can you use Claude for?
Claude is most useful when the task involves language, reasoning, information or code—and when you can define what a good result should look like.
Learn difficult topics
Ask for a simpler explanation, analogy, worked example or practice questions without replacing your textbook or instructor.
Work with documents
Summarise a supported file, compare sections, extract decisions or turn long material into an organised study plan.
Improve communication
Draft and refine emails, reports, presentations and professional writing while keeping your own judgement and voice.
Understand and improve code
Ask for code explanations, debugging ideas, test cases and alternative approaches—then run, inspect and validate the result.
Useful distinction: Claude can analyse images you upload and can create some visual outputs such as diagrams or charts, but Anthropic says it does not generate photos or illustrations like a dedicated image-generation tool.
A REUSABLE METHOD
How to write a better Claude prompt
You do not need complicated prompt tricks. Start with a clear outcome and enough context, then specify the task and review criteria.
Goal
State the outcome you want.
Help me understand containerisation for an AI application.Context
Share your level and relevant background.
I know basic Python but I am new to cloud and DevOps.Task
Describe the work precisely.
Explain the concept with one analogy and one technical example.Format
Define the structure and depth.
Use five short sections and finish with three review questions.Quality check
Ask for uncertainty and verification cues.
Flag assumptions and list the points I should verify in official documentation.COMPLETE EXAMPLE
“Act as a patient technology tutor. I know basic Python but I am new to DevOps. Explain containerisation for an AI application using one everyday analogy and one technical example. Use five short sections, then give me three review questions. Flag any claims I should verify in official documentation.”
TRY THESE FIRST
Three practical starting points
For a student
Create a 7-day revision plan from these chapter headings. Give each day one learning goal, one activity and five self-test questions. Do not invent facts that are not in my notes.
For a professional
Turn these meeting notes into a decision summary with owners, deadlines, unresolved questions and risks. Mark anything that is ambiguous instead of guessing.
For a developer
Review this function for correctness, readability, edge cases and security risks. Explain each issue, propose a minimal change and provide tests. Do not modify unrelated behaviour.
Keep the learner responsible for the result
A NEUTRAL COMPARISON
Claude vs ChatGPT: which should you learn?
Claude and ChatGPT are both general-purpose AI assistants, but they are products from different companies—Anthropic and OpenAI. Their available models, tools, integrations, limits and prices change over time.
For learners: build transferable skills—defining a problem, providing context, evaluating evidence and improving an output. Those skills remain valuable when models change.
RESPONSIBLE USE
Where human judgement matters
AI fluency includes knowing when not to trust the first answer. Use a review level that matches the possible harm of an error.
Accuracy
Claude can produce confident but incorrect information. Check claims, calculations, quotations and references.
Current information
Knowledge and enabled tools can vary. Use current primary sources for changing facts.
Sensitive data
Do not share confidential, personal or regulated information unless your organisation has approved the product and workflow.
High-stakes decisions
Keep qualified human professionals responsible for medical, legal, financial, safety and employment decisions.
